Motorists should expect an overnight closure on a bridge carrying Race Street (Route 1004) over Catasauqua Creek in Catasauqua Borough, Lehigh County, this week for sewer relocation work.

The bridge, located between Pineapple Street and 10th Street, will be closed from 7 PM on Thursday, July 19, to 6 AM on Friday, July 20.  During the one-night closure, eastbound traffic will be directed to follow a detour along Lehigh Street, North Dauphin Street, North Irving Street, American Parkway and Airport Road. Westbound traffic will be directed to follow a detour along Lehigh Street, Poplar Street and 10th street. When the sewer work is complete, the bridge will reopen.

Full replacement of the bridge, which is part of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s (PennDOT) Rapid Bridge Replacement Project, is now scheduled to begin during the week of July 23. It was previously scheduled to begin July 16.

During this time, Westbound traffic will be able to travel through the work zone in one direction. Eastbound traffic will be directed to follow a detour along Lehigh Street, North Dauphin Street, North Irving Street, American Parkway and Airport Road. Schedules are subject to change.

This bridge is referred to as JV-176 and is one out of the 558 bridges being replaced under the Rapid Bridge Replacement Project. JV references the joint-venture partnership between Walsh/Granite, which is leading construction for the entire project.
