Construction for the first pre-cast substructure bridge on the Rapid Bridge Replacement Project was completed this fall. The Central region bridge is located on SR 3002, spanning Laurel Run in Hartley Township, Union County.
Pile-drivers installed 54 bearing piles with 27 being pre-drilled. Three-sided cofferdams were in-place at both abutments to aid in construction of the abutments and also to protect a sewer line.
Pre-cast abutment stems and wing walls were utilized with a standard cast-in-place deck.
The bridge is designed with cantilever abutments on piles with an adjacent box beam superstructure.
Construction was scheduled to last for 75 days, but crews finished three days ahead of schedule, lifting the detour for motorists in the area. Crews worked seven days a week for most of those 72 days.
This bridge is referred to as JV-138 and is one out of the 558 bridges being replaced as part of the Rapid Bridge Replacement Project. JV stands for joint-venture, the partnership between Walsh/Granite, the firm leading construction for the project.
