Construction for the Route 224 (West State Street) bridge over an unnamed branch of the Mahoning River in Mahoning Township, is scheduled to begin as part of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s (PennDOT) Rapid Bridge Replacement Project. Replacement of the bridge will allow PennDOT to remove it from Lawrence County’s structurally deficient list.
Construction is expected to begin on October 11 and be complete by mid-November. During this time, drivers will be directed to follow a detour along Old Youngstown Road (Route 4007), Benjamin Franklin Highway (Route 422) and North Edinburg Road (Route 551).
The bridge was built in 1927 and averages 5,493 vehicles a day.
This bridge is referred to as JV-469 out of the 558 bridges being replaced under the Rapid Bridge Replacement Project. JV references the joint-venture partnership between Walsh/Granite, which is leading construction for the entire project.
